The music industry is notoriously dominated by dudes, but this weekend, one woman is celebrating her success as an independent promoter—and looking toward expanding her business.

Tess Mangum Ocaña runs Sonic Pie Productions, staging and promoting shows in the Triangle and all over North Carolina. She’s served stints booking for The ArtsCenter (for which the INDY gave her an Arts Award in 2012) and with Casbah (which is now Social Games and Brews), but more recently, she’s worked with the Art of Cool Festival, the Festival for the Eno, and the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual World of Bluegrass festival downtown. One of her biggest current projects is booking the annual free summer music series in Durham Central Park, which begins on June 8 and runs through late August.

Ocaña is marking the anniversary with a party at The Rickhouse in Durham on Sunday afternoon. It’s free and open to the public, and features a performance from Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba that begins at 3:15 p.m. But even as the celebration approaches, Ocaña is still looking toward growing Sonic Pie into something bigger and better—she’s stepping into regional production with Hippie Fest, a series with stops in North and South Carolina, as well as in Michigan and Ohio.

2017: a GREAT Sonic Pie Productions Year In Live Music

2017 has been a GREAT Sonic Pie Productions Year In Live Music. Here are some snapshots. Thank you to all our clients, production partners, artists, and audience members.

Don’t miss Texas blues/roots/country artist Charley Crockett at Motorco September 27

Charley Crockett. Up and coming Texas blues/country/honky tonk artist. First headlining show in Durham.  We’ve supported a lot of talent and we (our co-presenting sister Cicely Mitchell/So When Do I Clap?) see great potential in this band. If you like Gary Clark, Jr., you’re going to like this. You’re going to kick yourself if you don’t see them at this stage in their career, and we want Texas to know how much we love them–plus, Rissi Palmer Band opens! #TrustTheCurators #CheckThatTrumpet

Tickets to the show, Wednesday, September 27, are only $12 adv, $14 day of show. Nice early 7:30 p.m. curtain, and if you’ve never been to Motorco, it’s a one-story venue in downtown Durham, near Fullsteam. There’s room for both dancing in front of the stage and sitting, house left.

Rolling Stone named Crockett one of the “Best Things We Saw” at AmericanaFest in Nashville last week. His brand new album is called “Little G.L.’s Honky Tonk Jubilee” but here’s the title track from his last album, “In The Night.” See you at the show!
